The Old Tolbooth

Project type

3D virtual photos, using CGI to recreate bygone Edinburgh

Date

October 2025

Location

Edinburgh Old Town

Head past Goldsmiths Hall and up the vennel in the north west corner of Parliament Square and you find yourself in a small lane up the side of St Giles Cathedral. On your left is Jinglin' Geordie's house and workshop - the goldsmith who found Royal favour and went on to found George Heriot's School. Then facing you is a building steeped in iniquity - the Old Tolbooth. In the 1500s the Parliament met there, but over the years it had fallen into disrepair. Yet it was still used, as a jail, a torture chamber, and - on the balcony next to the High Street - as a site of public executions.
